The Secretary of State is Connecticut’s top elections official, and must therefore have the complete trust of our citizens. As an environmental attorney, an activist for social justice, and a member of the Hartford City Council, I have demonstrated integrity and competence over the course of my career. As a former member of both the Republican and Democratic parties, I’ve learned that the two-party system suppresses the vote and promotes corruption. Someone who’s not a Democrat or Republican needs be in the Secretary of State role to ensure full and fair elections. That would include stopping local registrars of voters from purging voting lists, a process that too often prevents homeless people or mobile low-income people from casting ballots. Further, an independent fighter is needed to get automatic voter registration and early voting into law in Connecticut. I want to see Connecticut pulled into line with the national agenda, as we are way behind. It is why I endorse rank-choice voting (RCV), which is a fairer way to elect qualified candidates, by boosting the chances of those like me who challenge the mainstream and help prevent elections from going to the highest bidder.
